Environmental Information Association Applauds Bipartisan, Bicameral Introduction of the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now (ARBAN) Act of 2025
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Environmental Information Association (EIA), a nonprofit membership organization representing professionals in the asbestos abatement and environmental remediation industries, proudly announces its strong support for the bipartisan, bicameral Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now (ARBAN) Act of 2025, introduced by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), and Representative Don Bacon (R-NE) on September 16, 2025
The legislation, named in honor of asbestos awareness advocate Alan Reinstein, will finally ban asbestos in all its forms in the United States, close regulatory loopholes, and ensure permanent protections for workers, families, and communities from this deadly carcinogen.
“On behalf of the Environmental Information Association, I express our strong support for the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act of 2025,” said J. Brent Kynoch, Managing Director of EIA. “We greatly appreciate the continuing commitment of Congress to finally ban commercial asbestos—a toxic substance our members have worked tirelessly to help manage and remediate for decades. With the passage of ARBAN, the United States will finally join nearly 70 countries that have already taken decisive action to protect public health.”
The ARBAN Act of 2025 would:
- Ban all asbestos, covering all six recognized fibers plus winchite and richterite.
- Close loopholes left by the EPA’s 2024 rule, ensuring prohibition of all uses, not just limited chrysotile applications.
- Provide lasting protections through legislation that cannot be overturned in court.
“Asbestos exposure has caused suffering, disease, and death for generations,” Kynoch added. “Our industry has seen firsthand the devastating impact of this mineral on workers, building occupants, and communities. The scientific consensus is clear: there is no safe level of asbestos exposure. ARBAN represents the comprehensive and permanent solution needed to eliminate asbestos from commerce and finally put an end to these preventable tragedies.”
EIA joins the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), American Public Health Association (APHA), Environmental Working Group (EWG), International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), and other leading public health and labor organizations as early endorsers of ARBAN.
