Innovation in Outreach and Education using Children’s Literature for Successful Prevention Messaging

Session Description:  Opportunities for lead exposure are plentiful in many children's environments. Yet, most families are not engaged in lead poisoning prevention education materials until after their children have been exposed. Research has demonstrated that children can be an effective education vehicle in providing anticipatory guidance to the adult reader.  Partners in Region 1, including the NH Division of Public Health Services’ Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, NH Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU)/Boston Children’s Hospital, along with EPA TSCA/Boston collaborated to develop the recently released children's board book, Happy, Healthy, Lead-Free Me!. This valuable primary prevention and education tool engages children while educating the adult reader with messaging on lead exposure prevention and pediatric blood lead level testing.  This presentation will review the book’s development, including the clinical and technical review process, along with beta-testing feedback from families incorporated into the final edition. Learn how  Happy, Happy, Healthy, Lead-Free Me! and its associated webpage www.leadfree.me are being used by public health departments, lead hazard reduction programs, and healthcare systems nationwide.

Brent Kynoch, EIA Managing Director & President, Kynoch Environmental Management
