Wildfires in the US have increased significantly during the last two decades, especially in the western part of the US. Wildfires generate combustion-by-products including poisonous gases as well as fine and ultrafine particles including soot, char and ash. Not only are these particles themselves health concerns, their abilities to adsorb other toxic chemicals, such as VOCs, SVOCs and heavy metals, can cause many health concerns including respiratory illness, cardiovascular distress, and even increased Covid-19 cases. The fire residues are also corrosive which can damage properties and personal belongings.
In this webinar, we will provide an overview of what are combustion-by-products (CBPs). We will also provide answers to questions such as why we should test for CBPs, what are the most common sampling methods, and how to analyze CBPs. The pros and cons of each sampling approach will be discussed as well. Data from 2022 Marshall Fires in Colorado will be presented as a case study.
